The acquisition of Polish citizenship by foreigners

Polish law provides for two basic ways to acquire Polish citizenship by foreigners:

  1. acquiring the citizenship under the decision of the Polish President (granting Polish citizenship – the so-called naturalization). Granting the citizenship by the President may take place in connection with legal and long-term residence of the foreigner in Poland,
  2. acquiring the citizenship by a foreigner married to the Polish citizen.

One should also mention two cases of acquiring Polish citizenship by people who have lost it in the past:

  1. acquiring the citizenship by a person who has lost Polish citizenship by marrying a foreigner,
  2. acquiring the citizenship by a person who as a child lost Polish citizenship due to the choice of a foreign citizenship by his/her parents.

In the subsequent chapters, you can read about the abovementioned ways of acquiring Polish citizenship.
