Polish citizenship guide

Citizenship of Polish emigrants and their descendants

Many Polish emigrants assume that as a result of leaving Poland and acquiring foreign citizenship, they have lost their Polish citizenship. The same is true about their descendants who were born abroad. In most cases, however, this assumption is incorrect. It is worth to notice that acquiring foreign citizenship and the definite severance of connections with Poland may not necessarily mean the loss of Polish citizenship. As a result, there are millions of foreigners of Polish origin in the world who are not aware of the fact that they have Polish citizenship.
Polish Citizenship Acts determine whether or not a Polish emigrant (and his/her children and grandchildren) has lost Polish citizenship or not. However, such loss is not easy to determine, especially in the case of the emigrations that took place in the distant past (particularly in the first half of the 20th century) because the citizenship regulations have changed frequently over the course of time.
