The history of Polish citizenship regulations began on January 20th, 1920. On that day, the first Polish Citizenship Act was passed; it came into force on January 31st, 1920. The Act regulated the citizenship issues of the Polish nation after regaining independence in 1918. The Act was in force until January 18th, 1951. On January 19th, 1951, the new Polish Citizenship Act came into force. Finally, the new Act was replaced by the current Polish Citizenship Act of February 15th, 1962.

Polish citizenship regulations are based on the three Polish Citizenship Acts that were in force during the following periods of time:

  • Polish Citizenship Act of January 20th, 1920 – in force from January 31st, 1920 till January 18th, 1951,
  • Polish Citizenship Act of January 8th, 1951 – in force from January 19th, 1951 till August 21st, 1962,
  • Polish Citizenship Act of February 15th, 1962 – in force from August 22nd, 1962 till present.
