Permanent residence

In order to legally reside permanently on Polish territory, the foreigner must obtain:

• a settlement permit, or

• a residence permit for a long-term resident of the European Communities.

In this chapter we will discuss in detail the conditions which must be met by a foreigner to be granted each of the above permits as well as the relevant formalities that he needs to complete.
Both the settlement permit and a residence permit for a long-term resident of the European Communities are granted for an indefinite period.

Settlement permit shall expire upon the receipt by the foreigner of a residence permit for a long-term resident of the European Communities.

The foreigners who have been granted a settlement permit or a residence permit for a long-term resident of the European Communities are issued residence cards.
